A business plan template to suit your needs
Why write a business plan?
A Business Plan sets out the starting point and the finishing point - you cannot get anywhere unless you know the first, and have a damn good idea about the second! Business experts from around the world all agree that their MUST be a business plan in place for any organisation to efficiently achieve its goals.
For small businesses is usually means the difference between huge success and going broke... but a good one can even mean the difference between getting finance or not even getting started!
Contents of a Business Plan
A Business Plan has 3 prime purposes:
- To provide a sense of direction, a vision of where the business is heading. This includes identification of a target market, the type of product or service the business will deliver, and its distinctive competence in that market to test the economic viability of the business idea. Does it make economic sense? Is there a target market with a need the business can meet and that will allow it to make a sustained and reasonable profit?
- To determine if the business can be financed. The business plan is the key document to make the case to potential investors...I explaining economic viability, the amount required, how the funds intend to be used, details of other funding sources, and exit strategy including the timing and expected gain.
- To determine if it can be implemented effectively. The business plan is the foundation for operating budgets. It provides yardsticks against which to measure the company’s performance. As such, it needs be a detailed analysis of all aspects of the business, rationally combined to build plan credibility.
A Business Plan should include:
- A Marketing Plan: This should include Corporate Mission & Vision, Corporate Objectives, Marketing Objectives, Marketing Strategies, Marketing Action Program and Management Feedback and controls activities and methods, along with break-even and budget sales analysis.
- A Finance Plan: This should include a Funds statement, cash flow analysis, detailed costs accounting, overhead analysis, and administrative management activities in coordination with all divisions and business units.
- A Personnel & Human Resources Plan: Inclusive of people, training, contingency, communication, succession and mentorship issues. HR plans often fail to include internal marketing and communications responsibilities, that can erode or undermine the success of the companies aspirations in sales and or profits.
- Production Plan: Interwoven and complimentary to all other plans in forecast, preparation and contingency, funding, capability and vision.
Business Planning & "Marketing"
Marketing is so basic it cannot be considered a separate function. It is the whole business seen from the point of view of its final result, that is, from the customer's point of view.
